What: A landscape photograph printed on paper by an unknown artist, passed down from her grandmother.
From Jaime: "This piece was the only thing I wanted when my grandmother moved out of her house and started giving away all of her furniture and decor. It’s in my office on my bookshelf. It’s in a hideous gold frame, yet I can’t bring myself reframe it. The frame has become a part of the photo.
I have been looking at this photograph my entire life. It’s a constant presence in many of my memories from growing up. When I was little, I thought it was a fairy-tale land with a castle sitting high above the town. Turns out, that’s exactly what it is, except that it exists in real life. The town is my grandmother’s hometown in Germany, outside of Stuttgart, and it sits in a valley, under a castle.
In 2010, I was able to visit her town and see "the Teck" castle on a work trip to Frankfurt. We rented a car and drove down the Autobahn to the town and then drove halfway up the hill to see the castle. It was a surreal yet unforgettable experience."
My grandmother is gone now, and this is what I have left.
These pictures, taken by Jaime on her trip, show the town and castle featured in the photograph:
